Breaking News: Before a demonstration against the BoG Governor and his appointees, NDC MPs call the police in.

In preparation for their planned demonstration against the Governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG) and his  two deputies, NDC MPs, have contacted the Greater Accra Regional Police Command today, Wednesday, August 23. Following their call for the resignation of the Governor and his appointees due to the losses, the central  bank incurred in 2022, a demonstration is set for Tuesday, September 5. As a result, the NDC MPs met with the Police inside to decide on the protest’s rules, under the leadership of their deputy leader, Emmanuel Armah Kofi. Following the aforementioned meeting, Armah Kofi Buah told the media that all the plans needed for a successful protest had been made. They claim that the illicit printing of more than GH80 billion by the central bank for the Akufo-Addo government is the basis for their protests. We are writing to you in accordance with Sections 1, 2, and 3 of the Public Order Act of 1994 (Act 491) to inform you of an upcoming public demonstration that the Minority in Parliament will be organizing in partnership with Civil Society Organizations, Progressive Forces, and other kind Ghanaians. The letter claimed, in part, “The purpose of this protest is to express our revulsion against the illegal  printing of money (about GH 80 billion) by BOG for the corrupt Akufo-Addo/Bawumia/NPP government between 2021 and 2022, which resulted in a hyper-inflation rate of 54.1% in December 2022.” They claim that due to the BoG’s actions, some 850,000 Ghanaians are now living in poverty. About 850,000 Ghanaians fell into poverty in 2022 alone as a result of this one act by BOG, which had a  detrimental impact on livelihoods and companies. The statement continued, “The Minority in Parliament, as representatives of the Ghanaian people, is  totally disgusted by the crass mismanagement and reckless mishandling of the affairs of the Bank of  Ghana, which resulted in a gargantuan loss of GH60.8 billion and a negative equity of GH5.1 billion in  2022, with its attendant hardships on Ghanaians. The COVID-19 pandemic and after investors in the capital market stopped lending to the government, according to  Dr. Ernest Addison, governor of the Bank of Ghana (BoG), the central bank did not start supporting the  government until 2020 and 2022. He claims that up until the start of the previous year’s economic challenges, the central bank carefully  adhered to the zero funding of government expenditures. Share

Cyber hygiene key for public safety – Dr. Albert Antwi Boasiako

In light of the rising number of cyberattacks, Dr. Albert Antwi-Boasiako, Director-General of the Cyber Security Authority (CSA), has emphasized the importance of users of digital systems learning the fundamentals of good cyber hygiene. He said that because “digital platforms have become common places for all businesses,” it is crucial for digital citizens, especially mobile money users, to understand recommended practices for cyber hygiene. On July 19, 2023, in Accra, during a courtesy visit by the Deputy Minister for Information, Hon. Fatimatu Abubakar, Dr. Antwi-Boasiako made these statements. The Deputy Minister was joined by Mr. Jamil Mohammed AbdulRahman, her assistant, and Ms. Aisha Jibril, her administrative officer. The purpose of the Deputy Minister’s visit was to familiarize herself with the CSA’s activities and growth trajectory since it became an Authority in 2021. Dr. Antwi-Boasiako welcomed the Deputy Minister and praised her for having inner strength in the face of the difficulties she is facing. He said, “I observe the part you play in the Ministry, and I praise you personally for your inner fortitude. The Director-General underlined the importance of the annual National Cybersecurity Awareness Month (NCSAM), which takes place in October, as the biggest and most significant annual event on the CSA’s calendar when he briefed the Deputy Minister on the organization’s activities. In addition, he alerted Hon. Abubakar to the approaching Global Conference on Cyber Capacity Building (GC3B), a groundbreaking occasion planned for Ghana in November of this year, and asked that the Ministry use its channels to advertise the Conference. Dr. Antwi-Boasiako emphasized that Ghana was chosen following a fiercely competitive process based on its advancements in cybersecurity and participation in international cooperation projects. Other nations, including France, Rwanda, Kenya, and Nigeria, among others, also made bids to host the Conference, but the organizers ultimately decided that Ghana would be the best option. Dr. Albert Antwi-Boasiako claims that the CSA is dedicated to advancing Ghana’s ambition to rank first (1) worldwide and among the top twenty-five (25) nations in the upcoming Global Cybersecurity Index by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU). The Director-General emphasized the necessity to maintain a neutral attitude as a security sector institution in the execution of its mandate and to utilize the platforms available to disseminate the accomplishments of the CSA in relation to the CSA’s visibility and accessibility to stakeholders. So, in order to reach a larger audience, he pleaded with the Deputy Minister to have the CSA publish its monthly advisories and alerts on the Ministry’s channels. In response, Hon. Fatimatu Abubakar praised the CSA for its accomplishments despite the short time since its founding. Hon. Abubakar stated that she supported the CSA in matters of content publicity and that the Ministry was dedicated to delivering excellence in the field of public relations, providing the CSA with a chance to inform the public. Transport companies threaten a 20% price increase.

If the government does not remove some levies related to the increase in fuel prices, the Coalition of Transport Unions and Associations have threatened to raise transportation costs by 20%. To lessen the unnecessary burden on drivers and other customers, the group demands that the government abolish the sanitation and pollution fee as well as the energy sector levy. The Concerned Drivers Association has set the government a two-week deadline to take the necessary action, according to David Agboado, national public relations officer for the organization. When we first started this, in June 2021, the government responded by sending ministers to visit us. We thought about it, and we know that the levy for price stabilization and recovery is no longer effective, the levy for the energy industry is. Share

Ordering OSP to surrender assets does not obstruct the inquiry in the case of Cecilia Dapaah, according to Richard Ahiagbah

The Special Prosecutor, Kissi Agyebeng, has been advised not to publish certain statements that could  jeopardize the image of the former Minister of Sanitation, Cecilia Abena Dapaah, by the New Patriotic  Party (NPP), which is in charge at the moment. He thinks the Special Prosecutor should focus on looking into the case and then pursue charges against  the former minister if they can prove there was misconduct. On Saturday, September 2, Mr. Ahiagbah indicated on JoyNews’ Newsfile that while Ghanaians support  the OSP’s investigation, he is opposed to media disclosures of the Special Prosecutor’s work. He urged the Special Prosecutor to complete the inquiry as quickly as possible, get the facts straight if at all feasible, and be recognized for his efforts in stopping the misuse of public funds. Background On August 31, the Finance and Economic Division of the Accra High Court issued a directive for the Office of the Special Prosecutor to return all funds confiscated from Cecilia Dapaah, the disgraced former sanitation minister. The Court ruled that this decision must be followed within seven days.  However, the Court stated that it was unable to authenticate the freezing of her bank accounts and other assets.  But, in a statement in reaction to the Court’s order, the OSP stated it respected the instruction but disagreed with it since it was incorrect. “The OSP disagrees with the Court’s ruling even if it respects it. Following the discovery that Madam Dapaah was keeping more than $1 million in her home, the OSP opened a corruption and corruption-related offense investigation into her. Share
